What to Prepare for Your Application

Before we begin, you will need:

  • A valid passport
  • A letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  • Proof of financial support for tuition and living expenses
  • A statement of purpose or study plan
  • Any required medical exams or police certificates (if applicable)

    Do I need a study permit for short courses?

    If your course is six months or less, you may not need a study permit, but having one can make it easier to extend your studies later.

    When should I apply for a study permit extension?

    You should apply at least 30 days before your current permit expires, though we recommend applying even earlier to avoid interruptions.

    Can I work while studying in Canada?

    As of November 8, 2024, students are allowed to work off campus up to 24 hours per week without a work permit.

    You can work off campus without a work permit if you meet all of these requirements:

    • You're a full-time student at a designated learning institution (DLI);
    • You're enrolled in either of the following:
      • A post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training program or;
      • A secondary-level vocational training program (Quebec only)
    • Your study program:
      • Is at least 6 months long and;
      • Leads to a degree, diploma or certificate
    • You've started studying
  • 04

    What happens if my study permit expires before I apply for an extension?

    You may be able to apply for restoration of status within 90 days, but you must stop studying and working until your status is restored.
  • 05

    Can I bring my family with me?

    Yes. Your spouse or partner may be eligible for an open work permit, and your children can attend school in Canada without a separate study permit.
